Fast shaver, fast rechargeFeb 24, 2009
By Randall G. Parker The 8170XL has the added extra inner rings of cutters that noticeably speed up shaving as compared to previous generations of Norelco shavers. I am very happy with the improvement. Also, it is much faster to clean than earlier generations of Norelcos. No need to remove each of the 3 cutting blades and fiddle with getting hair out of them. Pop it open and the accumulated hair falls out. Plus, it charges quickly.
I've only been using Norelcos for about the last 15 years. So I can't speak to how it stacks up against other brands. But this shaver is a big improvement over older Norelcos and also over cheaper models that Norelco sells today. I say it is worth the extra money. Saves me time.

I really want to like this razorJul 02, 2010
By Jonathan Bell And I do like it a lot more now than when I first got it. It seems to have a lot more get up and go than the one it replaced. It has a nice feel in the hand. It is quieter.
When I first got it I'd been growing my facial hair out a while, and it took about a week of working with my face to really get it under control. Now it's going on a month, and I still have stray hairs that it's having problems getting, particularly under the chin and a couple on the upper lip. It doesn't always seem to matter how many times I go over them, they are still there. This is my biggest gripe about it. I am hoping that in time this will become less of a problem as there are fewer of these now than there were initially.
I know some people complain about it being rough. I can see how that would be a problem if you're not letting the razor do the work for you. You don't have to press down on the face to get a good clean shave, and if you do it's not going to be much fun. Also, the blades get hot when they've been running a while and that can get unpleasant.
In summary, I like it enough to keep using it, but I will probably get something else next time.

By David Carlson This was a replacement razor for the one that I left behind at BOQ (unnamed military installation). It performs exactly as expected and I am very happy with the product.

Worst Norelco I have usedNov 27, 2010
By Dragonwort Castle I hoped this razor would condition like my other Norelco's, and I like Norelco shavers, but his one has never shaved well in over 2 years of use. It is only OK for a quick shave but it leaves a lot of stubble and I do not have a heavy beard. I have cleaned and lubricated it regularly and changed the heads but no improvement. For a better shave I have returned to my older models even my old corded one with old heads does better, and an older cordless I travel with. I recommend avoiding this model and get the new 3D 1280, or a Braun with the cleaner for a close shave if you get a newer model.

Norelco Electric ShaverSep 18, 2008
By Robert H. Yue I purchased the Norelco 8140xl electric shaver recently. It is an excellent electric shaver as advertised. I have been using Norelco electric shaver for almost fifty years and each model never disappointed me. The current floating head model cuts cleanly. I recommend the Norelco 8140xl electric shaver without any reservation. They are the best.
