4Very good mouse, issue with middle buttonApr 17, 2006
By Andre Nacul
As always, Microsoft has another great mouse. I am a big fan of Microsoft mice, since they are very anatomic, and very precise. With this mouse, it is no different. It is small, but not tiny, feels very good in my hands. Good precision, good speed.

Included with the mouse is a CD with drivers, including drivers for Mac, which is what I use. It is not necessary to install the drivers in order to use the mouse, but you need it to use some of the extra buttons or to enable non-standard features.

Overall, a very good mouse. A little noisy on clicking, it is true, but not an issue to me.

The middle button includes horizontal and vertical scroll. My only issue with the mouse concerns this button: it is sometimes hard to get the click to work on this button. I use it as a third button in many applications, such as Firefox and X11, and sometimes the click doesn't go through, and I have to click it again.

Other than that, a very good mouse. I would by it again. Really like the Microsoft hardware.

5Comfortable, good range, excellent tracking!Dec 19, 2005
By Scott Gerenser
Edel of Seattle must have gotten a defective unit, or his laptop is made out of lead. I was very impressed with the range and tracking of this mouse. I even tested it by putting my PowerBook at one end of a 6-foot table and using the mouse at the other end, and it worked perfectly. The software is intuitive and has all the necessary controls for both Mac OS X and Windows. The zoom feature is also pretty nifty, and also works on both platforms (although slightly differently, on the Mac the whole screen zooms, on the PC only a boxed area does).

The high-resolution optical tracking works great even for demanding applications like games. Overall I can't really find anything to not like about the mouse. Those with bigger hands might not find its small size comfortable, but it fits my hand perfectly. Also, the scroll wheel is "smooth scrolling" rather than having the detents that most mice have. It doesn't make a big difference personally but I know some people prefer a "clicking" scroll wheel.

4Great mouse at a good priceFeb 27, 2006
By Nitin Mehra
I have been using this mouse for more than a month now. Though I am quite satisfied with the performance and the asthetics of the mouse. There are a few things I would like to point out.

1. The mouse has an very hard middle click button, infact this is quite a prob because you end up scrolling using the scroll wheel while tryin to click it.

2. Not very good if you plan to use this mouse sitting on your bed. As it does not work all that great on fabric. Also if you work with the laptop on you lap and the mouse placed on the bed, it complains of a poor network connection, I wonder if the height defferential has anything to do with it.

3. The USB receiver in this mouse though smaller than its predecessor, on attaching it back to the mouse the entire thing does not fit snugly into the base of the mouse it infact keeps jutting out and has infact been scratched below due to the same.

4. The battery holder when released needs to fitted inside the mouse at an odd angle and at first I had to make quite an effort to get the battery holder to fit back into the slot. It kinda looks flimsy so did not want to exert force lest I end up breaking it.

Other than this its a perfectly good mouse to work with and has a great battery life. A very smooth scroll. A good but considering the price tag.

5Great range, great mouse overallFeb 23, 2006
By David
- Movement is very smooth. At first, it was much faster than my older Logitech wired mouse, but this one was on the cheap side, so I may be comparing apples with oranges, as I'm no mouse expert. Anyway, I need to slide down one degree in sensitivity, on Windows.

- The 4-way wheel was something that made me buy this model, because I was also considering the 3000 and the 6000 (laser) series. The 3000 was too simple, with a bigger receiver, and the 6000 may be good, but I don't have previous experience with laser mice and I feel OK with opticals. This was the "sweet spot", I guess.

- Range is quite good. As soon as I bought it (alkaline that came with it), I tested and it was, at least, 1.8 meters (I guess americans will use "6 feet"). Right now, after more than 20 days of daily use, it's ~ 1.6 meters, still more than enough, considering that you don't have arms as big as that... :)

- The amplifier is a good thing to have, but I don't really use it (and didn't buy for that). See other reviews here for useful things to do with this functionality.

- No lag at all. I play UT2004 with it. I'm not the best, but surely not the worst, and don't lose frags because of it.

- No interference, as I tested it under a lot of wireless networks, and never found a problem.

- I don't have the problems that other reviewers said here. I never lost any click, and it works very well on any surface that other opticals will.

Also my mouse doesn't stay stable with the receiver attached to it, but this is expected, obviously. With the receiver unattached, the mouse stays stable as it should be: the bottom is on one level, with my mouse. The flatness of it when connected to the mouse is useless, because on that situation the mouse is turned off, and you won't use it anyway. Much better than increase the size of the mouse just to make it engulf the receiver completely, at the cost of size, which is an important thing on notebook accessories.

No need for a right USB port, as I said above on "Range". I must say that people having a signal that is only a feet long are suffering interference from something else or just received a bad mouse.

And yes, it should come with a small carrying bag.

So, I'm very satisfied with it.

3Mixed reactionsJan 13, 2006
By Christopher Lively
I have three other MS mice and decided to try this little thing for my laptop.

Pros:

  • Reception is good. I have a toshiba M60 laptop and can use the mouse at least 4 feet away from it.

  • Movement is good. It works on my pants, carpet, and most everything except for high gloss surfaces (like conference room tables).

  • It is small

  • It shuts off when you put the adapter back onto the mouse, thereby saving battery life.

  • The adapter is about the size of a thumbdrive.

Cons:

  • The software doesn't allow you to tie the side button to a keystroke. This is a driver issue that may one day get fixed.

  • It started squeaking. Whenever I click the left button, it actually squeaks. I'll probably tear it apart and grease it at some point in the near future.

  • Because it doesn't work on conference room tables, I'll be buying a small mousepad for it. I think this is a problem with the underlying technology and not just this model.

There are not a lot of small notebook type mice that have additional buttons on the left side. Considering I use those a lot on my desktop set, this is a requirement for me. Also, I needed something that I could physically turn off when not in use, and had a tiny adapter. This mouse meets those requirements.

The cons (such as the squeaking) are annoying enough to reduce my rating to 3 stars.
