A+++++++ All-in-One HP J4550Jul 24, 2009

I just bought this printer [today] and made some sample prints and they are really good. Couple of Positives : 1. You may just load the black ink cartridge and the printer will print in black & white/gray. In my opinion this is by far the best feature. In my normal use 80% of the prints are documents which need only gray scale prints. My earlier Epson and HP photosmart would not print unless all the cartridges were plugged-in. That to me is ink drain. As the color cartridges would eventually dry up and need replacement just to satisfy the printer's desire for color ink. 2. Copy setting for Lighter/Darker copy: I'm not sure if other reviewers noticed that there is a setting on the front-panel in copy mode to adjust the darkness of copy. changing this to lighter mode will save some ink ; I've yet to see how many prints i get per cartridge. 3. Super fast prints : Who said the printer is slow. There are 3 modes in printing [Fast Draft, Normal & Best]. I have never used normal unless i'm printing photos or sales brochure. The Fast Draft is excellent for all purposes. Its sharp at the same time more than adequately dark. The normal mode is marginally more darker [and yes will take more ink too]. So unless you are printing Engg design or blue prints or sales material or graphics, i dont see why you would ever go for "Normal" mode. 4. Paper tray : i could see why you could get paper crammed up at corners, only if you have folds or turns on the paper to begin with. I havent experienced it. 5. The solution center software is very customizable. Let me first say this, this step is completely optional and if you have sometime on hand do customize it, it takes a little while to set the preferences if you want to make your life easier for the rest of your use. However you DONT have to customize it, it has prebuilt shortcuts for scanner usage[Scan to PDF, Scan to Word for Editing, Scan to Picture] and can be used right away after installation. You can set the scan resolution for every type of scanning requirement. 6. The optical character recognition is good with aplha-numeric text documents.
The Downside : 1. The LCD panel is 1 line display and is not backlit, hence hard to read unless you are directly infront of the printer. My printer is placed on the left side of the desk, so have to strech (good workout though:) 2. I agree Scanning takes a tad bit longer than printing, but thats cuz i have set the scan resolution at 600dpi, if you set it to default 300dpi, it would be twice as fast i assume. 3. Would have loved to have duplex [double sided printing] capability. 4. I find it little odd that the back portion of the print mechanism is a little exposed. Not that its a concern, just wondering from dust point of view.

So Far So GoodOct 08, 2008

I have only had this little gizmo for a day now but here is what I know. Set up was easy (particularly since I had a previous HP-very similar in operation). Print quality for black and white is GREAT. Haven't tried color yet. It was so cheap for all these features-you have to love that. Fax came through just fine on the first try. I paid significantly more for my last HP All-in-one and it seems to work just as well. Only reason I didn't give it five stars is that sometimes it takes awhile to print something-it stops in the middle as if it is thinking. Not a big deal but not perfect.

Not worth the money to me.Oct 24, 2008

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RGH52O4JIMB4M I usually try and read the reviews of my fellow amazon shoppers before I buy any product. I failed to do that with this all-in-one, and pay the price every time I start it up. Now keep in mind that this machine is plugged up to a Mac Mini (2.0 Intel Core 2 Duo 1GB of ram). I found this machine to be very slow, and though the one reviewer made a comment about the black and white print being pretty good, I wonder what settings he had the machine on. Enjoy the video...hopefully you will not decide to go cheap and regret it later on!

This is the worst piece of crap you can buy!Aug 20, 2009
By SD Critic LISTEN CLOSE BUYERS: If I could give this product zero stars I would, but since 1 star is the minimum I had no choice. I bought this printer at [...] (and don't worry, Amazon, I buy lots of stuff from you too) I felt the obligation to go in here and serve us all, since Amazon is the best place for product reviews. I am a hi-tech professional so whatever I say about my experience with this piece of junk will be ten times worse for the average user. 1. The first thing that I was shocked about is that the printer will often not take in the paper properly - it just won't! - this leads to errors, jams, paper waste - you name it. 2. The display is PATHETIC. I didn't expect an iPhone screen, but a single line display with merely 10 characters at a time??? oh and unless the display is under a bright spotlight, you'll never get the chance to read what it is telling you! That is so cheap, HP! 3. The software provided with this printer is bloated with millions of unnecessary components that have only to do with marketing (and you wonder why your computer is running slow all of the sudden?) - unless you are an advanced user (and choose the advanced option) - I really don't envy you. 4. I have tested this printer for about an hour with all of it's functionality and I could easily get the scanner to hang as well, after which everything froze and you literally had to pull the plug out and put back in to reset it. The main switch button did not do any good. I would expect a printer to be turned off properly even if it costs $10. That was the last straw. The only good thing I can say about this printer is that printing and scanning (when they worked in the first hour of its life) were decent. But what is it worth it if the product malfunctions 3 times in the first hour of its life? Once I am done writing this review - the printer is going back to HP. SHAME ON YOU HP TO SELL US SUCH JUNK! I REMEMBER AN HP 15 YEARS AGO WITH MUCH MORE ROBUST PRINTERS. AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED - YOUR REPUTATION IS RUINED.

Great Printer for the moneyNov 21, 2008
By C. Haase For a $49 printer which includes fax capability, you can't beat this. Yes, it is slow, but the print quality is fine for everyday printing of letters and documents. It's not meant for super high-quality color prints or large volume printing so don't expect it for $49. Setup on XP and Vista was simple and worked the first time. If I were to rate this on value alone, it would be a 4+ stars. I think the previous reviewer got a defective unit.
